Orton-Gillingham Approach

The Orton-Gillingham method is a structured, multisensory approach to teaching reading, writing, and spelling. Developed in the early 20th century by neuropsychiatrist Samuel Orton and educator Anna Gillingham, this approach is particularly effective for students with dyslexia and other learning difficulties.

At its core, Orton-Gillingham breaks down reading and spelling into smaller, manageable skills involving letters and sounds, and then builds upon these skills over time

Why it Works

Orton-Gillingham emphasizes the use of multiple senses in the learning process. Students see, hear, and touch to reinforce their understanding of language concepts. For example, they might learn the letter 'p' by seeing it, saying its name, and tracing it in shaving cream.

This multisensory approach creates multiple pathways for learning and retrieval of information

Tested in Learning Environment

The approach is tailored to each student's needs. Teachers continually assess student progress and adjust their instruction accordingly. This individualized approach ensures that students master each skill before moving on to the next

By combining these elements, the Orton-Gillingham method provides a comprehensive framework for literacy instruction, empowering students to become confident, capable readers and writers

Colourful Stories with Values

The use of colorful graphics plays a pivotal role in enhancing the learning experience by complementing the easy-to-learn text.  By associating images with words and ideas, learners can create mental connections that facilitate understanding and recall. The engaging graphics break up the text, making it less daunting and more approachable, which is especially beneficial for young readers or those with learning difficulties. This combination of visually stimulating elements with clear, accessible language fosters an inviting learning environment that encourages exploration and curiosity, ultimately leading to a more effective educational experience.

Using the evidence-based Orton-Gillingham structured literacy approach, this suite of 'decodable readers' (aka storybooks) is aimed towards emergent readers, reluctant readers, and dyslexic students.

This is a proven "building-block" approach to reading that is systematic, sequential, structured, direct, and accessible for struggling and new readers - as well as  ESL students.

Children's Illustrated Stories

In the heart of a lush, vibrant landscape, where sunlight filters through the leaves and the air hums with the songs of birds and the rustle of tiny creatures, lives a little inchworm. He is not like the other forest critters who seem to breeze through life with ease.
